Oil on canvas board
The Healer’s Robe is an oil painting on canvas board. It is the first abstract painting that I painted completely in oil and was the largest canvas I had yet worked on. The process was transformative as a void black hole became something light and comforting. What originally felt like a collapse became a place to be enfolded. As I worked on this piece, I was reminded of the redemptive stories in the Bible of Joseph's life and the woman who suffered from bleeding for 12 years and the ways I relate to their suffering and restoration through what God has done in my life. This piece reminded me of how we are healed by the wounds of Jesus and how all it takes is one touch from Him to be made clean, whole, and healed. We are covered by His blood and clothed with Him as our covering. Once again, the depths of who God is reaches down into the depths of our humanity, and through Him we are transformed, changed, and healed.
"As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good..." Genesis 50:20a ESV
"Now a woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years had endured much under many doctors. She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse. Having heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothing. For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I’ll be made well.” Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction." Mark 5:25-29 CSB
"He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care. Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed." Isaiah 53:3-5 NLT
